Procurement Still Falls Behind in Digitized Supply Chains, Says Accenture

“The digital revolution has largely overlooked procurement,” says Accenture.

By Patrick Burnson, Executive Editor · November 7, 2017

“The Future of Digital Procurement,” a new report released by Accenture, maintains that many supply chain managers are seeking to modernize this function, but may not have the tools to get started.

“The digital revolution has largely overlooked procurement,” says Accenture.

In its report, analysts examine how artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics add to the equation, thereby expediting digital procurement to produce better informed buying decisions, open new channels for engaging suppliers, and drive new efficiencies through smart automation.

The recently concluded Armstrong “3PL Value Creation Summit” in Chicago addressed many of the same concerns. Art Nourot, vice president of Carrier Procurement, at UNYSON, noted that as the industry becomes increasingly “digitized,” new demands are being made on 3PLs in North America.

“More transparency leads to greater efficiencies,” he said. “But at the same time, we must all be building better firewalls and find ways to keep our data secure.”

Meanwhile, many companies are racing to embrace digital to transform other key areas of the businesses. These include customer-facing ones such as marketing, sales, and service – all important supply chain functions.

“To date, procurement hasn’t commanded the same kind of attention or investment,” says Accenture. “True, companies have enthusiastically embraced eProcurement systems and even cloud-based procurement tools. But it’s time to move beyond simply replicating the same tedious procurement processes with new software. Leading companies are taking the next step and create a true digital procurement organization.”

According to Accenture, a true digital procurement organization automates repeatable
tasks to boost efficiency and potentially drive down costs. It equips stakeholders across the business with real-time access to insights
and easy-to-use online tools. It deploys new and smarter ways to infuse data models to enrich day-to-day operations and decision making. And it transforms how buyers interact with suppliers and other third parties by serving as
a platform for new levels and types of collaboration.

In essence, digital procurement enables the “Amazon-like” experience employees now want—but currently aren’t getting—in the workplace.

NETFIRA WINS EUROPEAN SOFTWARE AWARD

Australian technology company Netfira, together with German client Rosendahl Nextrom, has won a major European business connectivity software award.

The Austrian Supply Excellence and Purchasing Award was awarded to the companies at this year’s Austrian Purchasing Forum convened in Vienna for the category of “Effective Automation and Digitisation of Operational Efficiencies”.

The award recognises the Netfira’s industry-leading software solution for procurement markets, and comes at a time when the company has made substantial inroads into Europe.

In the past 12 months Netfira has digitally connected over 20 German Mittelstand and other European mid-sized companies with their supplier bases. The company’s enterprise customers include groups such as the world’s largest lock maker Assa Abloy, Staedtler, and Winterhalter, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of commercial dish and glass washers.

An industry leading solution

Netfira facilitates real-time electronic transactions between trading partners, eliminating manual data entry, and integrates with back-office systems to provide powerful and current information about inventory levels and pricing within their supply chain.

Their SAP Certified technology provides a platform for an online business-to- business supplier solution that streamlines the buying and selling process, and is disrupting traditional vendors including some of the world’s largest software and consulting groups.

“Netfira’s purchasing solution is designed in a modular way, is easy to install and easy to customise. Netfira’s unique Supplier App, based on Artificial Intelligence, is able to electronically connect a Purchaser to a Supplier within minutes! Critically, implementation of Netfira’s Supplier App requires no change to the supplier’s existing internal systems,” said Mr Reinald Schneller, Managing Director at Netfira.

Strong customer validation

As an example of the type of industrial and manufacturing groups now supported by Netfira technology, Rosendahl Nextrom is a leading supplier of production equipment for the global battery cable and glass fibre industry. The group chose Netfira’s procurement software after an extensive search.

As part of the implementation, around 150 of Rosendahl Nextrom’s largest suppliers have been connected, and the remainder of the firm’s 1200 suppliers will be digitally integrated over the next few months.

According to Mr Christian Pretterhofer, Director of Sourcing and Procurement at Rosendahl Nextrom, “Only when all suppliers are electronically connected can we completely automate our purchasing processes”.

Rosendahl Nextrom has already generated substantial cost and operational efficiencies, reduced errors and electronically connected a large number of their suppliers over the past several months. Purchasing at Rosendahl Nextrom is is now able to cope with a much higher number of supplier transactions in a much shorter time frame than was previously possible.

Automation of all operational processes including enquiries, quotes, order confirmations, advanced shipping notices and invoices are digitally enabled, while the Netfira solution also offers a fast and uncomplicated electronic connection to all suppliers. The reliability of transactions has been increased. Check and input errors have been completely eliminated, which has greatly reduced problems in downstream processes.

CORNELIUS CHOOSES NETFIRA OVER EDI
Cornelius, the world’s leading supplier of beverage and cooling equipment, is moving to reduce its reliance on EDI systems, replacing them with Netfira in its German operations.
The landmark decision by Cornelius (a member of the Berkshire Hathaway group) underscores a growing realisation that EDI is outdated and Netfira’s innovative software provides much better functionality at a much lower cost.
To date large international enterprises such as Klafs and Assa Abloy and in Australia Rheem, have implemented Netfira to enable electronic management of their supply chains.
Cornelius however sees Netfira as a solution to all its straight through processing and electronic communication needs.
With around 8,000 active material numbers and 24,000 order items per year, suppliers have to contend with a taxing workload.
“We no longer wish to put up with the high administrative costs that traditional data exchange systems such as EDI incur” according to Jens Heinrich, Cornelius’ purchasing manager for the group in Europe Middle East and Asia.
EDI typically only allows electronic connectivity with a small proportion of an enterprises’ customer base.
“Netfira offers electronic “on boarding” through portals, EDI and Apps making it attractive to almost all suppliers.”
“Netfira allows customers to continue to operate within their own IT environment. There is no need to convert to another costly system. In the end it’s a win-win outcome for everyone.”
“An added bonus is all original documents can be transmitted and archived” he added.
In addition to the quick and uncomplicated onboarding of clients and suppliers based on “App” technology, Netfira enables real time and dialog connectivity.
“The Netfira system will give all operative and strategic purchasers as well as Cornelius affiliates, worldwide constant access to the most current information.”
“We have determined this has significantly improved the timeliness and the granularity of supply chain information for both suppliers and internally.”

Netfira takes an hour to install. Cornelius has over 450 suppliers and almost 100 have already been on boarded.

NETFIRA UNLOCKS E-PROCUREMENT FOR ASSA ABLOY (GERMANY)
In another breakthrough in the European market, emerging Australian cloud-software house Netfira Pty Ltd (Netfira) has won the contract to automate the supply chain of two German subsidiaries of one of the world’s largest lockmakers, ASSA ABLOY.

The latest deal comes hard on the heels of two similar contracts recently won by Netfira. One in Germany where the world’s largest spa maker Klafs installed Netfira ‘Buyer’, and one in Australia where the iconic Australian manufacturer of water heaters Rheem installed Netfira ‘Seller’.

ASSA ABLOY, the maker of the famous Lockwood and Yale brands in Australia, purchased the ‘Buyer’ version of the innovative Netfira software.

With a one-time investment the cloud based ‘Buyer’ software integrated ASSA ABLOY’s supplier network quickly and easily.

“An automated purchasing solution only provides real value to the buyer if all suppliers are easily able to connect, a feat most other procurement software is unable to manage,” according to the Managing Director of Netfira Germany Reinald Schneller.

“Our solution is not only very fast to implement and easy to use but is very adaptable. Every order process ‘from purchase to pay’ can be effortlessly automated and easily enhanced with additional functions,” Mr Schneller said. “Our customers find the solution clearly superior to conventional technologies such as EDI or the often error prone OCR-based scanning solutions.”

“I was told that connecting our suppliers would be similar to downloading an app to a smartphone,” said Wolfgang Haerle, purchasing manager for ASSA ABLOY in Germany Austria and Switzerland.

“From what I had heard read and experienced so far I could not possibly believe that. But I must say that’s exactly how it is! The supplier app from Netfira is a really great tool. We are highly satisfied” said Mr Haerle.

ASSA ABLOY has already connected several hundred suppliers within weeks of implementing Netfira.

Standard procurement systems solve the buyer’s needs but often offer little value to the supplier. According to Mr Haerle however, “Our suppliers were thrilled immediately. Some of them even want to introduce the Netfira solution in their own businesses to connect to their own suppliers”

According to Andrew Liu of Gem Gianni Industries Inc. – a Taiwanese company that supplies ASSA ABLOY, “The Netfira App is ideal for us because it does not require any technical knowledge and creates immediate value.”

This reaction was confirmed by Sandra Eckhardt of the order processing department of Ferdinand Gross GmbH and Co KG, another ASSA ABLOY Supplier. “We were amazed at how quickly and easily the implementation went – Within just a few minutes our systems were connected with ASSA ABLOY.”.

Iconic Australian manufacturer of water heaters Rheem Australia has chosen Netfira Pty Ltd to streamline the supply of its products to its nationwide dealer group of plumbing merchants.

“Gone are the days when a portal alone is enough to support a sales and distribution channel” according to Netfira’s Managing Director George Ruul

“Making the shift to ecommerce necessitates both buyer and seller seeing real value in the transition” he said.

Taking orders from its network of dealers used to be a manual process for Rheem with orders sent  in by phone fax and email.

Netfira’s SAP certified “Enterprise Seller” software allows dealers to “look inside” Rheem’s inventory in real time and order the parts they need.

But unlike any of its competitors, orders placed through the simple to install Netfira “app” automatically update the customer’s own accounting system: effectively giving small and medium enterprise the same level of automation otherwise only available with the purchase of a large and expensive EDI package.

According to MYOB user Mr Kris Karanasos of Parramatta Hot Water, and long time Rheem customer, “I really like Netfira. It has substantially reduced the time and effort to place an order with Rheem. Not only that, but it also automatically updates my records. “Having accurate stock level information available allows us to better service our own customers”

“The installation of Netfira has definitely improved our customers experience and encouraged change in their buying behaviour” according to Mr Paul See, National Customer Support Manager at Rheem Australia.

“Our customers see immediate benefit in using a product that makes buying faster and more accurate and reduces their overheads.”

“Here at Rheem, we have seen substantial productivity benefits and are seeing significant reductions in order processing times and returns,’ Mr See said.

Netfira is pleased to announce its first major customer in Germany.

After conducting an extensive search, KLAFS, the world’s market leader in sauna, wellness and spa, has installed Netfira to solve its procurement needs.

“We are very excited to have broken through in the European market,” said Managing Director of Netfira Mr George Ruul.

“Germany is home to many world class companies like KLAFS, who find the Netfira procurement solution offers them several unique features not available from our competitors, and all at a very reasonable price.”

Procurement at KLAFS used to be a manual process using the phone fax and email. Netfira now makes this process completely electronic.

“Full automation in e-procurement only works if all suppliers are electronically connected” according to Mr Klaus Kaiser, Chief Procurement Officer and Member of KLAFS Management board.

“The Netfira solution has enabled us to automate everything from purchase order transmission and acknowledgement, order confirmation and checking, through to insertion of orders and invoices in to our SAP back office system.”

Another key advantage of Netfira is its ease of deployment.

“The implementation of Netfira took a couple of days and provided immediate value. No user training was required because it links easily into SAP.” Mr Kaiser added.

What is unique to Netfira is the ease of use not just for the buyer but for the suppliers, no matter what size they are.

“Our suppliers are all very satisfied. The Netfira connector doesn’t require any technical skills on their part, supports their existing systems, reduces their workflows and is installed in less than an hour,”Mr Kaiser said.
